Emotional Disorders

Treating Depression, Anxiety, Stress and Fatigue with Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine has always recognized the strong connection between the body and the spirit, emotions and mind. They are intertwined, always linked, and cannot be separated. We all have experienced how emotions affect our physical body. A common and well-known example is getting stomach pains and/or cramps when feeling extreme stress, or breaking out into a sweat and feeling your heart race when feeling nervous. Not only do we know the emotions can have an effect on the body, but it is important to remember that the state of the physical body can affect our emotional health. Traditional Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture and herbs, is a very effective treatment for emotional disorders.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Stress

Since the early 90s, studies have proven what Chinese medicine has known for hundreds of years: that acupuncture is a positive and holistic treatment for those suffering from mental illness and emotional disorders, including depression, bipolar, anxiety, and stress. Depression affects more than 8 million people within the U.S. Common symptoms include a marked depressed mood for most of the day, every day, diminished interest in pleasurable activities, significant weight loss or gain, changes in appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, fatigue, inability to concentrate, and the list goes on and on. It is an incredibly difficult condition to try to live with. Treatment mainly includes medication that may produce unwanted side effects.

Chinese medicine has always recognized these disorders as a disharmony in the flow of ‘qi’ or energy in the body. This disharmony can come from a number of sources: stressful lifestyle, poor diet, lack of exercise, pregnancy and childbirth, poor sleep, etc. The stresses we experience can cause blockages in the body’s energy pathways, which result in emotional disorders. Acupuncture offers a way to unite the body, mind and spirit so that it can once again find harmony.
