The weather is cool and crisp, the sun is setting earlier, and all of a sudden, you start to notice a dry tickle in your throat. You know, that annoying cough that can show up this time of year? In Chinese medicine we consider this ‘Lung Dryness’ or ‘Autumn Dryness’, and it makes perfect sense—fall is the season of the Lung and dryness is its enemy. Our Lungs need to stay moist to function well. When dryness hits, perhaps from the drier air, we get that persistent tickle and cough. The solution? A simple, delicious Pear and Almond tea that you can make quickly and offers real relief. Pears are used to help the Lungs regain their moisture, generating fluids and soothing the dryness. Almonds have a descending quality that helps guide Lung Qi downward, stopping that upward cough reflex. Add in a little honey and you have sweet relief.

This is food as medicine—simple, effective, and probably already in your kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe pear (Asian pears work especially well)
  • 1 handfull of almonds (raw, unsalted)
  • 2 cups of water
  • Honey to taste
  • Fresh mint leaves

Directions:

  1. Cut pear in half, remove stem and seeds
  2. Chop pear into small pieces
  3. Place almonds and pear pieces in water
  4. Bring to boil, cover, reduce to simmer for 15 minutes
  5. Remove from heat
  6. Strain if desired (or eat the pears and almonds for extra benefit)
  7. Add honey and mint to taste

Drink 1-2 cups daily during dry season or when experiencing dry cough
