How Late Summer Affects Your Energy, Mood, and Sense of Balance
As we move through August, many people begin to notice a shift—feeling a little more tired than usual, mentally foggy, or emotionally unsettled. You might be sleeping fine, eating well, and going about your usual routine, but still feel like something is… off.
If that sounds familiar, Chinese medicine has a helpful explanation: you’re in Late Summer.
What Is Late Summer in Chinese Medicine?
In the Five Element model of Chinese medicine, the year is divided into five seasons—not four. Late Summer is the fifth, a short but significant period of transition between the peak energy of summer and the inward-turning energy of fall. It typically falls in August through early September here in Minnesota.
Late Summer is associated with the Earth element, which governs digestion, nourishment, stability, and mental clarity. When Earth is balanced, we feel grounded, focused, and well-nourished—physically and emotionally. But when it’s out of balance, it can show up as fatigue, worry, and a sense of being “stuck”, feeling heavy in our bodies and our spirits.
Why You Might Be Feeling Off Right Now
I know as soon as someone starts mentioning the State Fair, I start counting down the last precious weeks of summer. But, even if you’re not consciously thinking about fall, your body and mind are responding to the seasonal shift. You may notice:
- A drop in energy or motivation
- Trouble concentrating or completing tasks
- Feeling emotionally heavy or a bit anxious
- Increased worry or anticipation about fall routines
- A craving for more routine or structure, but resistance to change
We often think of change as something that happens in September or October, but your system is already adapting now. That in-between feeling can be uncomfortable—and completely normal.
How to Support Yourself During Late Summer
You don’t have to power through or pretend everything is fine. This is a time to slow down, reflect, and gently prepare for the transition ahead.
Here are a few ways to support yourself:
- Simplify Where You Can
Late Summer isn’t about starting something new or cramming more in. Instead, give yourself permission to scale back—whether it’s fewer commitments, easier meals, or looser routines. This is a time of year that an afternoon nap or lounging with a great book on the weekend is encouraged.
- Establish Small Grounding Rituals
Even five minutes a day of something steady can help anchor you. That might mean stretching in the morning, walking around the block after work, or making a cup of tea before bed. Small rituals help calm the nervous system and begin to get your system ready for the routine that is coming with the fall season.
- Try Acupressure for Mental Calm
A helpful point during times of transition is Yintang, located between the eyebrows. This point is known to calm the mind and reduce worry. Using your index finger, apply gentle pressure for 30–60 seconds while breathing slowly.
- Be Gentle With Yourself
Fatigue, fogginess, or restlessness right now doesn’t mean something is wrong—it means your body is responding to the changing season. It is a time to honor our bodies desires. Trust that this phase will pass and you will feel the drive to get things done soon enough.
Acupuncture Can Help You Transition Smoothly
Seasonal transitions are one of the best times to receive acupuncture. I have a number of people that just come a few times a. year to help them adjust to the changes of the seasons. A treatment during Late Summer can help:
- Rebuild and stabilize energy
- Support digestion and mental clarity
- Ease emotional heaviness or worry
- Prepare the body for a healthy transition into fall
If you’ve been feeling off, this is your invitation to reconnect and realign.
