Meet Dr. Gemma Beck

Dr. Gemma Beck, Clinical Herbalist at Selby Acupuncture

Join us in welcoming our newest team member, Dr. Gemma Beck. Gemma is Selby’s first-ever dedicated Clinical Herbalist, offering Chinese herbal medicine consultations and acupuncture to help patients achieve their health goals. She brings a wealth of clinical experience and a kind, joyful presence to our team. She received her Ph.D. in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and earned her undergraduate degree in Botany with an emphasis in ethnopharmacology from the University of Minnesota.

Herbal consultations are designed to complement acupuncture and provide personalized recommendations using traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Whether you’re seeking support for digestion, stress, sleep, women’s health, or overall wellness, Gemma works with patients to create individualized treatment plans.

You can read more about Gemma’s experience here.

Gemma is available for Herbal Consultations on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Additionally, beginning mid-July, she will be offering Acupuncture sessions on Sundays and Tuesdays.

Get to Know Gemma

We caught up with Gemma and asked her a few questions to get to know her:

  • SA: What do you like most about Selby Acupuncture?
    • GB: What I like most about Selby acupuncture is the community. The patients and practitioners that bring warmth and kindness, as well as the herbs and medicinary of course.
  • SA: What do you like most about being an Acupuncturist and Herbalist?
    • GB: What I love most about being an herbalist and acupuncturist is getting to know someone new every day. Every person is shaped by their unique experiences, perspectives, challenges, and joys, and I feel honored when people trust me with a glimpse of that complexity. My role is to understand their story and help them feel better, whatever they may be facing. I see that same complexity throughout the natural world. Just as ecosystems thrive through interconnected relationships, herbs work together in formulas to create effects that are more powerful and nuanced than any single herb alone. I believe people are much the same. We each bring unique gifts and strengths, and when we come together in healing, community, or everyday life we amplify one another’s potential and create something greater than we could alone.
  • SA: When you’re not working what brings you joy?
    • GB: When I’m not working there’s several things that bring me joy. I love trail running as well as hiking and going on plant walks with my dog. I’ve been relearning local flora and fauna again after living in the PNW for several years. I love spending time with my friends up north by the lakes or at music shows/ festivals. I really enjoy cooking and have been loving using herbs from the garden to make pesto this summer. I love traveling to see my friends in other states/countries and to experience other cultures and languages. It’s been really nice to have the time and mental space after grad school to enjoy reading and writing again.
  • SA: If you could do anything tomorrow without limitations, what would that be?
    • GB: If I could do anything tomorrow without limitations, I would create a space in Minnesota where herbs and crops could be grown sustainably on a large scale. My goal would be to make high-quality, locally grown herbs more accessible and affordable for the people who need them. While I was at the University of Minnesota, I helped care for the Native American medicinal garden, and that experience sparked a dream I’ve carried ever since. I would love to build a system inspired by those principles: one that works with nature, requires minimal conventional agricultural inputs, and produces an abundance of food and medicine to nourish and heal the community.

We’re excited for you to meet Gemma and experience the depth of knowledge and compassion she brings to Selby. Gemma can work with you and your provider to create an individualized herbal medicine treatment plan. Whether you’re interested in Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, or both, we know she’ll be a wonderful addition to your care team.
