Looking for natural relief? We have got you covered.
Here in Minnesota, we are experiencing some beautiful weather, and for many of us, finally spending time outdoors. May feels like a time of re-awakening —but for many it also brings something else: sneezing fits, itchy eyes, and sinus pressure that just won’t quit. If that sounds like you, you’re not alone—and you’re not without options.
We love helping people find natural solutions from seasonal allergies using the tools of Chinese medicine. Here are some ideas using herbal support, acupuncture (or acupressure you can do at home!), and practical tips to help you manage allergies!
Why Seasonal Allergies Happen (and How Chinese Medicine Sees It)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), allergy symptoms are often the result of imbalances in your Qi—your body’s vital energy. One specific type of Qi, called Wei Qi (or Defensive Qi), acts like your immune system’s front line. It’s constantly working to protect you from outside invaders like pollen, wind, or seasonal changes. But sometimes, Wei Qi gets a little overzealous and starts reacting too strongly—even to things that aren’t truly harmful. When that happens, your body becomes hypersensitive, and you get the familiar symptoms: sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and fatigue.
Herbal Medicine: You Have Options.
Herbal Formulas That Target the Root.
Chinese herbal medicine is one of our favorite ways to tackle seasonal allergies—especially when we can create a customized raw formula tailored just for you. These formulas work on both the root cause (your unique internal imbalance) and the branch (your active symptoms).
We also frequently use time-tested formulas for allergy support, including:
- Pe Min Gan Wan – Great for clearing nasal congestion, opening the sinuses, and drying phlegm. This is the main herbal formula we use in clinic, and it works great!
- Xiao Chai Hu Tang – For allergy symptoms that come with fatigue or a lingering “off” feeling—this formula helps regulate the body’s response and strengthen immunity. Often times we will add in additional herbs to customize this one, herbs like Jing Jie and Fang Feng make it very suitable for allergy symptoms.
- Bi Yan Wan – Excellent for relieving nasal inflammation, post-nasal drip, and congestion from high-pollen exposure, along with the itchy and watery eyes.
All herbal formulas should be taken under the guidance of a trained herbalist—your body deserves individualized care.
Try This at Home: Easy, Natural Allergy Relief
There’s plenty you can do between appointments to support your system and ease allergy symptoms:
Acupressure to the Rescue
You can stimulate powerful acupuncture points at home with gentle pressure:
- LI4 (He Gu): Located in the webbing between your thumb and index finger. Apply firm pressure and massage for 30–60 seconds. Great for relieving headaches, sinus congestion, and general inflammation.
- LI20 (Yingxiang): Found on either side of your nose, just outside the nostrils. Use your fingertips to apply pressure here while taking deep breaths—it can help open nasal passages and reduce sinus swelling.
Try these points daily (or several times a day!) during allergy season to keep things moving.
Drink Nettle Tea – Often
Nettle is a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory powerhouse. We recommend drinking at least four cups a day—more if your symptoms are strong. You can steep dried nettle leaves (available at co-ops or natural food stores) in hot water and sip throughout the day. Bonus: it’s mineral-rich and hydrating, too.
Other Simple Strategies
- Nasal rinses – A neti pot or saline spray can flush out allergens and reduce congestion.
- Stay hydrated – Thin mucus and keep your system working smoothly.
- Keep windows closed on high pollen days – Especially in the morning and on windy afternoons.
- Use an air purifier – A HEPA filter can make a big difference, especially if you’re sensitive to dust or pet dander.
And Yes, Acupuncture Helps (A Lot)
Acupuncture works wonders for allergy relief. It helps regulate your immune system, calm inflammation, and opens the sinuses—many patients feel relief after just one session. Combined with herbs and self-care, it’s one of the most effective ways to get lasting results, naturally.
